Description:

An extremely popular two-seater trainer biplane which saw service with many air forces around the world. The RNZAF had over 300 in service during World War II.

Australian-built, this Tiger Moth served with the RNZAF as NZ1417 before civilianisation Construction Number: DHA503. It is now on display at the Southward Car Museum for your pleasure.


Originally constructed by de Havilland Australia at Bankstown NSW in 1941.

During November 1941 the aircraft was received by the RNZAF as NZ1417 and used for training purposes.

By August 1947, the now ZK-AOX was being flown by members of the Southland Aero Club and by February of 1951 was being operated by the Wellington Aero Club.

In June 1957, ‘AOX’ had a new home with the Larsen family at Taumatahi. Finally, during 1963 this ‘Tiger’ was operated by Alexander Helicopters of Wanganui and eventually the aircraft registration was cancelled in June 1964.


The ZK-AOX is surrounded by an ‘interesting’ display of ‘important’ aero engines.
