Description:
The AJS Model 16 was a dependable 350cc single-cylinder motorcycle developed from the wartime Matchless G3/L military bike. Introduced to civilian riders after World War II, it quickly gained a reputation for reliability, simplicity, and low running costs.
Early models featured a rigid rear frame, while later versions adopted rear suspension for improved comfort. Its straightforward engineering made it easy to maintain - an important quality during the post-war years when fuel and resources were limited.
A near-identical version was produced under the Matchless name as the G3L. One distinguishing feature between the two marques was the position of the magneto: mounted at the front of the engine on the AJS, and at the rear on the Matchless.
Practical, economical, and well-proven, the Model 16 remained in production into the mid-1960s and became one of AMC’s most enduring post-war motorcycles.
