Description:

Hans Glas GmbH entered the motor vehicle market in 1951 with the Goggo motor scooter, at a time when post-war Germany was in need of affordable, practical transport. As consumer demand shifted toward enclosed vehicles, Glas introduced the Goggomobilin 1955. These tiny cars were designed to be economical, compact, and accessible to the average West German family.

The Goggomobil TS-300 Coupé, introduced shortly after the sedan version, was powered by a 296 cc two-stroke engine, producing 15 horsepower. Despite its modest size and power, it featured a 4-speed gearbox with reverse and could reach speeds of up to 85 km/h. Three engine options were available in the TS series: 250 cc (TS-250), 296 cc (TS-300), and 392 cc (TS-400).

From 1955 to 1969, over 280,000 Goggomobils were produced in total, including sedans, coupés, and vans. The TS Coupé alone accounted for 66,511 units. Between 1962 and 1966, production also took place in Bilbao, Spain, under license by Munguía Industrial S.A. These Spanish-made models were built to different specifications and totaled around 5,000 units.

As Germany’s postwar economy improved, consumers began opting for larger and more powerful vehicles. Demand for microcars like the Goggomobil declined, and Hans Glas GmbH struggled to stay competitive. In 1966, Glas was acquired by BMW, who took over the Dingolfing plant. Today, that same factory is one of BMW’s largest and most advanced production sites.
