Description:

The Holden VL Commodore marked the final evolution of the first-generation Commodore platform, introduced in 1978. By the mid-1980s, Holden faced challenges in meeting new emissions standards and sought a reliable powerplant for its updated model. The solution came from Japan Nissan’s RB30E engine, a 3.0L straight-six, offered both compliance and performance, paired with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox.

Released in 1986, the VL featured a more aerodynamic body, sleeker front-end styling, and updated interior trims. The Berlina trim sat above the base model SL and below the luxury Calais, offering comfort upgrades like power windows, improved upholstery, and extra instrumentation.

The VL series proved highly popular, becoming a top seller in Australia and briefly outselling the Ford Falcon in the private market. It was the first Commodore to feature factory-fitted fuel injection as standard on some variants and laid the groundwork for Holden’s later performance models.

In 2013, Holden announced that Australian manufacturing would cease in 2017, bringing the Commodore’s local production story to a close after nearly 40 years. The VL remains a nostalgic favourite, especially among enthusiasts for its connection to both Japanese engineering and Holden’s golden era of Aussie sedans.
