Description:

The Lotus Turbo Esprit debuted in 1980 as the Type 82, featuring a turbocharged 2.2-litre engine producing over 210 bhp. To handle the extra power, Lotus strengthened the chassis and upgraded suspension, cooling, and braking systems. The first 100 units were finished in striking “Essex” livery, named after a then-sponsor of Lotus’s F1 team.

In 1981, the more affordable Esprit S3 followed, sharing many improvements. That same year, the Turbo Esprit gained pop culture fame when it appeared in the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, driven by Roger Moore.

Though Lotus faced financial difficulties through the mid-1980s, the Turbo Esprit remained its best-selling model. With its angular styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro, lightweight fiberglass body, and strong performance, it appealed to drivers seeking both speed and sophistication.

Production of the Turbo Esprit continued through several evolutions into the 1990s. Its legacy as a sharp-handling, forward-thinking British sports car helped keep Lotus afloat and cemented the Esprit as one of the brand’s most iconic creations.
